All volunteers will receive an initial interview and should be aged 18 or above, during this interview you will be asked to state the nature and extent of the contribution you are able to make, such as the days on which you are available, and whether or not you wish to become a volunteer driver, or whether you wish to contribute in other ways. It should be remembered, that as a volunteer you can give as much or as little as you wish to the scheme, there are no minimum or maximum time commitments.

If you decide, that you wish to become a “Volunteer driver”, you will be required to provided evidence of the following:-

  • Valid Driver’s Licence

  • MOT Certificate (if applicable)

  • Insurance Certificate

  • Signed authorisation letter from your insurance company (a standard letter to be sent to your insurance company will be provided by the B&DGTS).

All prospective volunteers will also be asked:-

  • About their skills, experience and suitability

  • To provide the names of two suitable referees

  • To fill in relevant forms, including the signing of the Volunteer Agreement

Volunteer drivers are issued with Record Sheets on which they should note the car’s mileage at the beginning and end of each journey together with other information. A list of nominal fees will be provided so that drivers may request the agreed payment from the service used (i.e. Minimum of £2 and/or 50p per mile). Out-of-pocket expenses may be claimed by submitting the appropriate form to the Treasurer every month and reimbursement is normally every six months.

Further details will be provided on acceptance together with the scheme’s information booklet.

The B&DGTS treats all volunteers and service users with dignity and respect regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, language, disability, age, political or religious persuasion, social and economic class. Incidents of alleged harassment by either volunteer or service user will be treated with extreme seriousness.
